Bernardo Silva's nine-year tenure at Manchester City will end this summer after more than 450 appearances and a trophy haul that defines an era.

The 31-year-old Portugal international confirmed Thursday he'll depart when his contract expires in May, closing a chapter that began with his £43m move from Monaco in 2017.

Silva leaves with 19 major honors, including six Premier League titles and the club's maiden Champions League trophy. Two more could follow if City secure the league and FA Cup in the coming weeks.

Regardless of how the season ends, Silva's place among City's all-time greats is assured. He stands alongside Sergio Aguero, Vincent Kompany and Kevin De Bruyne as a cornerstone of the club's most dominant period.

BBC Sport examines why Silva will be remembered as one of the finest players to represent Manchester City.

The architect of City's unprecedented dominance

Silva arrived at City in 2017 when the club had won just two Premier League titles, the most recent three years prior. He departs having helped establish City as the defining force in English football.

Now the club's second-longest serving player, Silva has been central to six league titles in eight seasons. His debut campaign produced the first: City's historic 100-point season, a Premier League record that still stands.

The 2019 title race saw City accumulate 98 points to edge Liverpool by a single point in one of the competition's most thrilling finishes. Between 2021 and 2024, Silva helped City achieve what no English club had managed: four consecutive top-flight titles.

A seventh league crown remains possible, with City still pursuing Arsenal in the final weeks of the campaign.

Silva's impact extends beyond domestic success. His performance in the 2023 Champions League semi-final second leg against Real Madrid ranks among his finest in City colors. His first-half brace propelled City to the final, where they defeated Inter Milan to claim the trophy and complete a historic treble.

With 451 appearances—seventh-most in club history—Silva has contributed 76 goals and 77 assists. His game embodies Pep Guardiola's philosophy: exceptional technical ability married to relentless work rate and tactical intelligence.

Beyond his on-field contributions, Silva has evolved into a crucial leader. Following the departures of Kompany, Aguero, De Bruyne and Kyle Walker, he emerged as a dressing room pillar, culminating in his appointment as club captain in 2025.

After Thursday's announcement, former Manchester City and England defender Steph Houghton praised Silva's leadership style, noting how he has set the standard through his performances over nine years.

"There is nobody that can do what he does. With Bernardo, he is a different kind of leader to Kompany or Fernandinho," she told 5 Live.

"A lot of it is through performances and about him leading the boys in doing certain things. You can't fault his effort every single time he pulls on a Manchester City shirt.

"No matter where he is playing, he gives absolutely everything."

Analysis: 'He has been a heartbeat of an all-conquering Manchester City'

Silva's extraordinary trophy haul – 19 in 451 appearances, averaging one every 24 games – cements his status as a Manchester City great.

He joined City from Monaco in May 2017, having helped knock Pep Guardiola's side out of the previous season's Champions League alongside a talented squad that included Kylian Mbappe.

Since then, he has been central to an all-conquering Manchester City side that reached its zenith in 2023, winning their first Champions League with a 1-0 victory over Inter Milan in Istanbul and completing the treble after securing the Premier League and FA Cup.

This season, as captain, the 31-year-old has continued to deliver exceptional performances as City chase down leaders Arsenal in the Premier League, having already lifted the Carabao Cup and with an FA Cup semi-final against Championship side Southampton ahead.

He could yet depart by securing another domestic treble.

The Portuguese midfielder remains the complete package, maintaining such high standards that he will attract interest from Europe's elite clubs including Barcelona and Juventus, and potentially from Saudi Arabia.

Silva combines creative brilliance with fierce competitiveness, an artist with a combative streak who despises losing and consistently demands excellence from himself and his teammates while remaining supportive.

He celebrated victories with passion, but is also remembered (fondly by City fans at least) for refusing to applaud Liverpool's newly-crowned Premier League champions at the Etihad Stadium in July 2020, calling the ritual "a kind of hypocrisy."

Silva's response drew criticism in some quarters but only strengthened his standing with City supporters as an emblem of the club's golden era.

Guardiola and everyone at Manchester City will recognize that replacing Bernardo Silva will be no easy task.

How have the fans reacted?

Ian, from the Lake District: "The word is overused but he is a genuine legend."

Alex, from Manchester: "One of the best to wear the shirt, underrated by many. We wouldn't have won what we did without him. Real Madrid at home in the treble winning season, he was unplayable. Will be a huge miss and irreplaceable."

Martin, from Northampton: "He's been a colossus across his time at City. The man just epitomizes what a club legend is all about. Thank you, Bernardo."

Ollie, Richmond: "The closest to Messi the league has ever seen. Such a beautiful player to watch and City have a job on their hands trying to replace him!"

Duncan, High Peak: "To play 450+ games in the modern era with the unrelenting and packed schedule is a testimony to Bernie's character and fitness. As already mentioned, his greatest night was undoubtedly against Real Madrid in the 22-23 Champions League semi. He was simply unplayable."

Salal, UK: "Bernardo leaves a true legend of City and English football. For years, he was the glue that held the team together, especially after the departures of Toure and Aguero. City would not have won half the titles they have without him."

Dermot, a Manchester United fan from Belfast: "As a Manchester United fan I will be glad to see the back of him as he made my life a misery on one or more occasions. What a pleasure it was to see him play in the Prem. A class act. Good luck for the future Bernardo."
